Stanislav Shushkevish is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
Emanuelis Zingeris, chairman of the Commission on International Affairs of the Seim (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, has spoken about this initiative.
Together with him (Shushkevich), the other politicians who signed the Bialowieza Agreements in 1991 have been nominated for the Nobel prize: the former president of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, and the former Secretary of State of the Russian Federation, Gennadii Burbulis.
“In 2011, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Bialowieza agreements is being celebrated, in which were announced the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the founding of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This act was crucial at that time, when the world was anxiously waiting for the collapse of the Soviet Union, aware of its nuclear capabilities and of the high potential for conflict in its regions. The peaceful formation of the CIS became a very important act of diplomacy, which changed the geopolitical and military picture of the world,” it is stated in the letter, sent to the Committee on the choice of the Nobel Peace Prize.
